Why did i start collecting this tiny Japanese sculpturs, i really don’t know. Those Netsukes are killing me – i am an addict & please that someone will send me to the doctor. But can’t you understand fy weakness for this tiny creatures. Look at this netsuke that i am holding in my hands just now. I think that this Mammoth Ivory Netsuke of the Japanese Noble Man Sitting in Swung Chair Explaining everything. Probably one of this Noble man artist made this sculpture while he looked on his master relaxing.

Mammoth Ivory Netsuke -Guan Yin on a Dragon

I’m always love netsuke with a good story or legend that  behind the netsuke. Today we are lucky to have an amazing, Museum quality Mammoth ivory Netsuke from IvoryAndArt.com Netsuke collection of – Guan Yin Sitting On Dragon .

Guan Yin – most known as  the Goddess of Mercy.
Guan Yin is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition. Also known as Kuan Yin, Quan’Am (Vietnam), Kannon (Japan), and Kanin (Bali), She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, She hears the cries of all beings. Quan Yin enjoys a strong resonance with the Christian Mary Magdalene, and the Tibetan goddess Tara.Guan Yin’s name is a translation of the Sanskrit name of her chief progenitor which is Avalokitesvara, also known as Avalokita. In its proper form it is Kuanshih Yin, which means “She who harkens to the cries of the world.”

Guan Yin & The Dragon Legend:
Many Years ago, a distressing event happened in the South Sea. The sons of one of the Dragon Kings (a ruler-god of the sea) was caught by a fisherman while taking the form of a fish. Being stuck on land, he was unable to transform back into his dragon form. His father, despite being a mighty Dragon King, was unable to do anything while his son was on land. Distressed, the son called out to all of Heaven and Earth.Hearing this cry, Guan Yin quickly sent Shan Tsai(her student) to recover the fish and gave him all the money she had. The fish at this point was about to be sold in the market. It was causing quite a stir as it was alive hours after being caught. This drew a much larger crowd than usual at the market. Many people decided that this prodigious situation meant that eating the fish would grant them immortality, and so all present wanted to buy the fish. Soon a bidding war started, and Shan Tsai was easily outbid.

Shan Tsai begged the fish seller to spare the life of the fish. The crowd, now angry at someone so daring, was about to prise him away from the fish when Guanyin projected her voice from far away, saying “A life should definitely belong to one who tries to save it, not one who tries to take it.”

The crowd, realising their shameful actions and desire, dispersed. Shan Tsai brought the fish back to Gua distressing event happened in the South Sea. Mammoth Ivory Netsuke - Dragon inside a Bottle Gourd

Hold your braet because today in our Daily Netsuke Collection we have an Amazing Master Piece Netsuke of a  Dragon carved inside a  Bottle Gourd. This netsuke got three powers Into one Netsuke:

1. The Dragon – The dragon carved Into the Bottle Gourd & he alignment into the Bottle Shape.  Dragons are ultimate symbols of cosmic Chi (energy). It is said to be the most potent symbol of good fortune in the Chinese pantheon of symbols. As one of the four creatures of the world’s directions, the Dragon stands for new beginnings. The Dragon also has the power to release water to parched lands, and which in turn stands for abundance and relief. Continued success, high achievement, and prosperity are also listed among the Dragon’s arsenal of good qualities, which rank it one of the most popular of Asian signs.

2. Bottle Gourd symbolizes heaven and earth, hence the universe. Within it is a magical zone in the form of an alternate universe or the entrance to another world. Daoist immortals and magicians can travel between these two worlds. In the more mundane world, doorways and/or windows in elite Chinese houses were often shaped like bottle-gourds, again suggesting a passage into a different realm.
According to our Netsuke of Dragon in a Bootle Gourd it could  simbolized the Yellow River , the Sichuan basin, and the origins of major “dragon veins” (a technical term in geomancy–fengshui) as bottle-gourds.

As well Bottle Gourds are considered to be magical objects that can be used to overcome the malevolent forces of nature such as demons, monsters, even giant catfish (in Japan).

3. The Pearl - Another important Symbol is carved on that Netsuke; The pearl that the dragon Holding on his toung: the pearl represents the dragon’s wisdom – hence the term: “pearls of wisdom.”

I love  Dragon netsuke – I love what the Dragon symbolized & i lile his features – All over the world Dragons were mentioned from the east to the west. In the west usually people fought with the Dragons while in the East dragons considered as one of the most powerful creature. More specifically, Dragons are the embodiment of primordial power – the ultimate ruler of all the elements. I love the Buddha Netsuke! I remember the first time that i saw Buddha figurine  before 20 years ago i was young in a Trip to the East(Well their i fell in love at Asian art) & i just couldn’t get my eyes from the Buddha figurine of it was painted or sculptured.  My First Netsuke at my  Netsukes collection was Buddha Netsuke. When i have the privilege to see Netsukes that I love the story that they are telling as well as their beautiful carving i become emotional.  Take a look how the snake is   twisted around the elephant & strangle the elephant before he can even think to swallow the elephant. Holy god – I want to thank God that he gave me the chance to see in my own eyes such blessed talent & such beautiful Netsuke. We just received this Mammoth Ivory netsuke from IvoryAndArt.com to review(Before they gave me the netsuke -  they already told me that he is chosen to their Top 10 netsukes Collection)

When i am holding the netsuke in my hand it’s really impressive to see how the Master carver  succeeded to carved five children figurines that each child is doing something different, as well as wearing different clothes from each other. It’s means that the master carver gave his attention for any tiny detail in order to carved this Netsuke to perfection.

Look at the expression on the children faces – it’s fascinating.  The Child that picking the Plantain(kind of Banana) is standing on his friend shoulders while their two friends supporting them – one of the children pulling the tree big leaf in order that it will be easier to pick the fruits. the fifth child is watching in order to prevent someone to surprise them.
